Phil Walker

Phil Walker: A Comedian for All Ages (and Stages)

Blackpool and the Fylde Coast have long held a magnetic pull for celebrities. The constant influx of visitors, arriving on trains and charabancs for day trips or week-long getaways, created a constant demand for entertainment. This vibrant atmosphere not only attracted stars, but also nurtured them, like a stage waiting for its next act.

Among those drawn to the Fylde Coast’s infectious energy was Irish comedy legend Roy Walker. It seemed inevitable almost for Phil Walker, with his siblings – actor brother Mark and actor/singer sister Josie – were destined for the spotlights too.

From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition

Phil’s journey began on the demanding circuit of holiday parks, honing his craft at iconic venues like Butlins. He had to be a chameleon, entertaining audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

While demanding, this experience built the stamina and adaptability he would need for a career that would encompass the gruelling Edinburgh Fringe Festival, morale-boosting troop tours, packed summer tours, and the rigorous demands of panto season. Later years would see him captivating audiences at book readings, school visits, and library events, facing a different kind of challenge – hundreds of wide-eyed, energetic children!

Phil’s ambition to progress in the industry led him to take a leap of faith. Following a successful open mic night at Manchester’s Frog and Bucket comedy club, he plunged headfirst into the world of professional comedy clubs. This meant crisscrossing the UK, venturing as far afield as The Falkland Islands, Kosovo, Kuwait, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Germany. Early recognition came in the form of a CityLife Comedian of the Year award and critical acclaim at his Edinburgh Fringe debut. These accolades solidified his path, even amidst the demanding schedule of a touring comedian.

But Phil’s life wasn’t just about entertaining. He’s a devoted husband to Janet and a proud father to Verity. He’s even conquered a bicycle ride from the UK to France, a feat of physical endurance. And if that wasn’t enough, this year he tackled and completed an Ironman competition – a testament to his unwavering spirit.

In 2013, Phil saw an opportunity to give back to the comedy community. He launched his own club, Woofers, nestled within a local cricket club in his hometown of Lytham, Lancashire. Woofers served as a platform for fresh talent and offering more established names a space to experiment with new material or test out a change of direction on a friendly, receptive audience. The low-ceilinged venue fostered an intimate atmosphere, quickly reaching capacity for each show. It was clear – Phil needed a bigger space. Ta, Da it didn’t have to go too far, just to  the Lowther Theatre, conveniently located just across the road.

Phil wasn’t restricted to his local stomping ground. He continued performing on the national circuit, gracing larger venues. He also found a niche in the world of pantomimes (with a face perfectly suited for the role, of course!). He racked up a total of 18 professional pantomimes, including a successful four-season stint as writer, director, and performer at the Preston Guild Hall. These productions consistently garnered five-star reviews and breaking box office records. Initially, Phil enjoyed the comfort of performing at the locally in Preston, but later productions took him around the country, requiring him to be away from home during the holidays.

Phil’s talents extend beyond stand-up. He also lends his voice to various projects, with credits including The Oddkinsons, Manchester United, Dancing with the Stars, and Tizer.

Adapting to Challenges and Embracing New Opportunities

Then came the global pandemic, turning the entire entertainment industry upside down. Ever resourceful, Phil pivoted, organizing successful outdoor “drive-in” shows at the Lowther Theatre. These events have become an annual tradition, more recently held on the picturesque grounds of Lytham Hall.

Phil readily admits to a silly side, which shines through in his children’s book, “The Snots.” produced in 2018. Young audiences adore the story, captivated not only by the narrative but also by the brilliant illustrations by Tim Stead. Phil also relished visiting schools, libraries and groups to read it for them.

He recently turned his hand to acting in the West End and has clocked up several tv appearances, so a ‘man for all seasons’

Reviewers have likened Phil’s comedic timing to that of the dearly missed Bobby Ball, another comedy legend who found a home in the Fylde Coast. Interestingly, Phil and Bobby were long-time friends, often catching each other’s local performances.

Bringing it Onward and Upward

2022 saw Phil take the stage as opening act for the legendary Frankie Valli on his UK tour. He also provided support for comedy superstar Jason Manford on his “Like Me” tour. Woofers has also reopened last Autumn after Phil’s busy summer on Cruise Ships

Woofers Fans eagerly await his return to the Lowther stage, a monthly dose of laughter guaranteed to brighten everyone’s day.

Phil’s comedic persona is as versatile as his career. With a face that practically screams “comedy” and a cheeky charm that blends Northern wit with Irish whimsy, he connects with audiences of all ages. To some, he might be the mischievous younger brother, forever teasing. For others, the life-of-the-party uncle, keeping gatherings lively. And to many, a hilarious friend, the perfect companion for a night out filled with laughter.

The artistic spirit seems to run in the family. Phil’s daughter has followed in her father’s footsteps, embarking on an already successful acting career. She’s blessed with both her father’s comedic talent and her mother’s captivating looks – a winning combination on any stage.

Verity, Janet and Phil Walker

His good lady Janet, once a Lytham boutique own is now an Entertainment Specialist & Talent Booker for a large US Company. So they are all in the ‘biz’

This is just the beginning of Phil Walker’s story. Who knows what comedic heights he’ll reach in the next decade? One thing’s for sure, his infectious humour and dedication to entertaining makes him one of the most sought-after comics around today and we hope he will continue to bring joy to audiences for years to come.
