If you like me gave an inward groan when you heard about a new restaurant opening, and hoped it wasn’t ANOTHER Italian…..dont get me wrong I like Italian, but I feel we have enough! Well, it’s not, No 54  is Scandinavian Inspired and the whole concept is built around #hygge  (pronounced hue-gah)

I met up with Helen Vavoso (also of Spago Seafood Restaurant and Java Bistro & Wine Bar in Lytham) to ask her about the idea. Helen and husband Tony had been looking to expand and wanted very much to stay local, so when the chance to get premises on Wood Street in St Annes came up, it was a kind of fate.

So what does it mean?

I actually had picked up on some of Helen’s ideas whilst stalking her on Pintrest, and just thought she was making over one of their existing business, and she has certainly put in the research of the subject…..as usual I digress…….

Hygge is central to the Nordic sense of well-being. (Quote taken from  How to Hygge: The Secrets of Nordic Living)

The modern incarnation of hygge is as much a state of being, a state of mind, as it is about coziness, conviviality, and kinship with others. “It’s about stepping back from the hectic pace of modern living and looking after ourselves; about savoring the small moments of joy and contentedness we experience in life.”

This all fit nicely in a restaurant setting where you share food, drink and the experience with friends & family.

The Design

So the plan was in motion and with Louise Leahay of 360 Interiors , who also worked on stunning ‘sister’ restaurant in Lytham, the #hygge influence is in the feel as well as the look!

This was translated into lovely wood, from very pale to dark, muted colours and a few well placed accessories, a feeling of calm, a feeling of space.

The Food

#hygge  is also reflected in the food, by way of Sharing Platters and Tapas to share with friends.

Some Scandi inspired options include Snitter , Rosti ,  Frikadeller and a Cheese Fondue. There really is something for everyone with vegetarian dishes, a heavy nod to fish and shellfish and dishes for the confirmed carnivores too! With breakfasts served until 2.00pm , 40 covers inside and 30 outside in fabulous weatherproofed terrace, it is going to be on everyone list for brunching. lunching & dining

What is also nice to know, is that he menu relies heavily on locally produced & sourced ingredients.
